Nature on the Bay - Fish & Marine

The Mobile-Tensaw Delta and Mobile Bay areas form a major coastal estuary, a transition zone where fresh water from rivers mixes with tidally-influenced salt water. Estuaries are known for their exceptional biological diversity—particularly in fish and marine life.

As a complex network of rivers, creeks, lakes, wetlands, bayous and bays, the Delta is naturally teeming with hundreds of species of both fresh and saltwater fish, as well as other forms of marine life. Most of the state’s 297 freshwater species can be found in the Delta basin.

Known throughout the Southeast for its first-class recreational fishing, the Delta and Mobile Bay area features an abundance of black and striped largemouth bass. In the spring, crappie fishing is excellent along the banks of timbered creeks and lakes; as for bream, sunfish and bluegill fishing is impressive in the shallow lakes and bays of the lower Delta. Catfish, trout and croaker are also well established in the area.

Key saltwater fishing includes redfish, speckled trout and flounder—which are especially abundant in the lower Delta near river mouths. The Bay area is also known for its wide variety of shellfish, shrimp, anchovies and crabs.
Fishing events and tournaments are held in the Daphne area annually.

Daphne is renown for its seasonal “Jubilee”—a phenomenal event that brings a bounty of seafood right to the shore itself.
