Nature on the Bay - Mammals
The Mobile-Tensaw Delta and Mobile Bay area is home to most of the 62 species of mammals native to Alabama. Deer, feral hogs, coyotes and various species of fox are found throughout the Delta and are often seen in rural areas around Mobile Bay. The black bear, however, is limited to the upper parts of the basin in an area encompassing some 146 square miles of mostly swampland.
The Delta wetlands and similar habitats around the Bay teem with river otters, skunks, raccoons, mink, weasels, armadillo, opossum, four types of rabbits, chipmunks, woodchucks and various squirrels. After fighting its way back from near extinction, beaver are now found in abundance in the area. Several species of mice inhabit the sandy dunes of the lower parts of the Bay.
Marine mammals include bottlenose dolphins, harbor porpoise and the endangered West Indian manatee.
