Nature on the Bay - Amphibians

What would the Mobile-Tensaw Delta and Mobile Bay areas be like without their native amphibians? Quiet!

Alabama’s smooth-skinned, cold-blooded amphibians include some 30 species of frogs and 43 species of salamanders—most of which are found in huge numbers throughout the Mobile Bay region.

Frogs include the American toad, American bullfrog, southern toad and eastern toad; various tree frogs, spring peepers, pickerel frogs and the leopard frog. The greenhouse frog is an exotic species now well established in Baldwin and Mobile counties.

Salamanders include the mudpuppy, spotted salamander and the hellbender (which can grow up to 18 inches in length!).
