John L. Borom Alabama Coastal Birdfest
The John L. Borom Alabama Coastal BirdFest invites you to great birding on October 6-8. Knowledgeable and entertaining guides will lead you through some of the best birding spots in North America as we welcome the annual fall migration of birds from all over North America. Coastal Alabama is a critical stop-over point during migration, so you never know what you might see as you explore our coast on foot and by boat. Birders from beginners to experts will enjoy birding trips to Dauphin Island, Fort Morgan and Bayou LaBatre, plus boat trips in Mobile Bay, the Mobile-Tensaw Delta and Weeks Bay.
Birders choose the Hampton Inn Mobile East Bay, a BirdFest host hotel, year round. Guests' birding adventures begin at the hotel. Overlooking the Mobile Bay, the property is adjacent to the Alabama Coastal Birding Trail Site 25, D'Olive Bay. Bay view rooms with balconies and the lobby balcony are excellent locations where birders often see: tri-color herons, night herons, osprey, gulls, terns, clapper rails, pelicans, and many more. In addition to the grass marsh leading to the bay, D'Olive Creek winds along side the property and provides additional habitat.
Alabama ranks fourth in the nation in bio-diversity among plant and animal life. During the fall migration the numbers of bird species in the area rises drastically. The Mobile-Tensaw Delta is over 30 miles long and 12 miles wide and is the 2nd largest river delta in the US. It includes over 200,000 acres of wetlands! This broad range of habitat along with the large influx of birds during the fall migration patterns provides the birding enthusiast with a spectacular opportunity. In fact the American Birding Association list nearly 400 species in the records for the state of Alabama, or almost half of the total number of species recognized for the entire continental United States
The John L. Borom Alabama Coastal BirdFest includes walking, boat and bus trips. These include the mudflats of the Mobile Bay, the sand dunes and sea oat grasses, swamps, maritime forests and wetlands. BirdFest offers nearly 20 birding tours with expert guides to great spots on the Alabama Coastal Birding Trail, evening speakers, dinner events and a free day-long Bird & Conservation Expo with exhibits, speakers, vendors, and films.
